Globally, more than 120 million metric tons of tomato cultivation waste are generated annually. Recent studies have shown that tomato leaves contain various bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids and phenolics, making them a functional raw material with development potential.

The following are several key areas supported by research:

Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Properties: Tomato leaves are rich in substances such as rutin (with concentrations as high as 45.21%) and 4-hydroxycoumarin, which have demonstrated strong free radical scavenging capabilities in studies. Experiments have also confirmed that their extracts can effectively reduce intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, indicating their anti-inflammatory potential.

Antitumor Potential: In multiple in vitro studies, tomato leaf extracts have demonstrated cytotoxic effects against human cancer cell lines, including those associated with gastric and breast cancer. Among these, alkaloid extracts were the most effective, with IC₅₀ values as low as 9 μg/mL.

Antibacterial Activity: Studies have confirmed that tomato leaf extracts exhibit dose-dependent inhibitory activity against microorganisms such as Escherichia coli and Candida albicans.
